Do Dental Sealants Really Work? Explore Their Role in Preventing Cavities

Dental sealants are resin based injectable materials that fill deep grooves (pits and fissures) on chewing surfaces of premolar and molar teeth to form a protective layer to prevent cavities. These pits and fissures are naturally formed during tooth formation on the chewing surface of back teeth, which can be difficult to clean effectively using tooth brush, thereby making them more susceptible to cavities. Sealants reduce cavity risk by up to 80%.

Preventing cavities with sealants is often less expensive than treating cavities that have already developed.  The application is painless and requires no drilling or anaesthesia.

The ideal age when sealants can be applied –

  • In Children (after permanent molars erupt, around ages 6 years & 12 years)
  • Adults with deep grooves in teeth and with no existing fillings
  • High risk patients who are very prone to cavities.

There are different types of Dental sealants like Resin based sealants, GIC based sealants and Compomer based sealants. Resin based sealants last longer than the others. A few resin sealants are known to release fluoride which helps in making the enamel stronger to resist tooth decay.

The process of applying a sealant is purely done by the dentist. It is a non-invasive procedure which requires no drilling of tooth and usually takes only a few minutes per tooth. The procedure is mentioned below.

  • Teeth are cleaned and dried by the dentist.
  • An etching gel is applied in the deep groove areas to roughen the surface. This gel is washed away with water.
  • Sealant is injected or painted in the deep pits and fissures of the teeth and this sealant material is hardened with a curing light (for resin based sealants).

Sealants can last for about 5 to 10 years with proper care. It’s important to avoid chewing on hard and sticky foods to prolong the life of these sealants. Sealants should be checked during regular teeth cleanings to ensure they are still intact. If they show signs of wear or chipping, they can be reapplied.
