ARE YOU BEARING THE BRUNT OF YOUR JAW JOINTS ?

Is there a persistent pain on your face, or neck, or shoulders, or in and around the ear when you speak, chew or even when you open your mouth wide? Do not ignore it; instead consult your dentist, because you may be a victim of temporo mandibular disorder.

TMJ?

It is a joint that connects your lower jaw to the temporal bones of your skull or simply it is a joint that connects your upper jaw with the lower jaw. It is estimated that 30% of the population suffers from temporo-mandibular disorder at some point in their lives.

Causes of TMD

Its Job:

The temporomandibular joint helps you to move your jaw up and down, and side to side; so that you can talk, chew and yawn. Now the problems with your jaw and the muscles in your face that control the joint are called temporomandibular disorders. This affects the chewing muscles and the joints between the lower jaw and the base of the skull.

Causes of TMD:

As we said that this is the joint you use most of the time in a day, in turn to its functions, when you cause more discomforts like grinding of the teeth (biting of your own teeth) or clenching of the teeth puts a lot of pressure on the joint and hence results in pain. If you have arthritis in the joint then, pain occurs. Most importantly, stress is the key factor which leads you to tighten the facial and jaw muscles or clench the teeth. The TM joint combines a hinge action with sliding motions. The bony parts that interact with the joint are covered with cartilage and are separated by a small shock absorbing disk which normally keeps the movement smooth. The TM joint can be painful if this disk erodes or moves out of its proper alignment, or the joint’s cartilage is damaged by arthritis or the joint is damaged by a blow or impact.

Signs and Symptoms:

When you feel pain or tenderness of your jaw it is a sign of TMD. Aching pain in and around the ear, and difficulty in chewing is a symptom for TMD. Aching facial pain is also a symptom for TMD. Locking of the joint making it difficult to open or close your mouth.

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT USED:

T SCAN:

T SCAN

This is the technology available only at FMS in Hyderabad. With this scan you can visualize the areas which are not possible using traditional occlusal indicator methods. This uses digital software that helps clinicians to identify premature contacts, high forces and interrelationship of occlusal surfaces. T Scan helps a dentist to balance the patient’s bites with precision and accuracy. It also helps to plan eliminating destructive forces on a new restoration or performing an occlusal analysis and adjustment procedure.

ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

It is a method of medical diagnosis that obtains information about diseases by passively recording the electrical activity of body parts (that is, their natural electrophysiology) or by measuring their response to external electrical stimuli (evoked potentials). We have electro diagnostic equipment available. BioPak is a complete diagnostic system that records a range of parameters of the stomatognathic system including the function of the mandible and muscles of mastication.

ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

The information obtained by the system helps diagnose and treat temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), sleep disorders and craniofacial pain. It can be used for restorative, orthodontic, denture and implant occlusal reconstruction.
