·        How does tooth staining occur?

To understand how teeth whitening works, lets understand how teeth become discolored.

As we drink liquids like coffee, tea, and red wine or intake cigarette smoke, foreign material collects and forms a layer on top of the outer enamel layer. This is known as pellicle film. This pellicle layer can be scraped away to some degree by your dentist and some of it can be brushed away with tooth whitening toothpastes (extrinsic stains). However, it won’t all be removed and as it sits on the porous enamel it penetrates deeper into the tooth. Once this film gets deeper into the tooth no amount of brushing can remove it (intrinsic stains). Although these stains are completely harmless, they can look unsightly and this is why many people seek tooth whitening treatments.

  • How does tooth bleaching work?

Tooth whitening uses bleaching agents usually in the form of hydrogen and carbamide peroxide and are normally used in two methods. These are

  • In- Office treatment
  • At home  treatments

In-clinic treatments are carried out by a cosmetic dentist. A variety of different tooth whitening treatments are available and your dentist will determine what is best for you. Most treatments involve shining a laser beam of light onto the bleaching gel which has been applied to the teeth to speed up the whitening process.

With the at home procedure the dentist will take an impression of your mouth and from this make custom trays which will cover the teeth. The patient then administers a thin ribbon of gel to the trays at home and wears them for around 2 hours a day, or preferably at night, while sleeping. The difference usually occurs within 1-2 weeks but for those with more pronounced staining then it can take up to 6 weeks to achieve the desired results.

My teeth are sensitive when I bleach!

If your teeth are sensitive during bleaching there may be an underlying cause talk with your dental professional. If you have traditionally had sensitive teeth, use a desensitizing toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for at least one month before whitening. Also tell your dentist if you are having sensitivity, as he or she may be able to lower the percentage concentration of the whitening product.

The bottom line is that tooth bleaching procedures are considered effective and safe when monitored by a dentist and if done properly can produce spectacular results…!!
