Teeth and smile straightening technologies

Designing
change your life
More and more patients seek orthodontic teeth straightening or realigning procedures that do not involve traditional bulky metal braces.
Teeth and smile straightening technologies that are difficult to detect have been around for several years. Some treatment methods involved the use of very thin wires and brackets while others have incorporated the use of ceramic components… all in an effort to appear invisible.
During recent years, aesthetic plastic tooth movement systems like FMS SMART ALIGN, Invisalign, Clear correct and Clear Aligners have become the proven treatment of choice for creating teeth straightening results desired by patients who do not want to wear traditional bulky and uncomfortable braces.

Tooth movement with
plastic appliances:

Clear plastic tooth moving appliances are excellent options for those adult or responsible adolescents who are reluctant to wear fixed appliances ,who will follow the clinician’s directions, and whose chief complaint centers around mild to moderate alignment problems. However, this discipline requires the essential elements of orthodontic tooth movement, force, space and time; the force must be adequate to move a tooth without inducing a pathologic response, enough space must be present to accomplish the desired tooth movement, and the appliance must be in place for an appropriate length of time for the force to be effective. The clinician can control two out of three of these essential prerequisites: force and space. However, as with any dynamic removable appliance, the patient must provide the third essential: time.

The two contemporary systems for moving teeth with plastic appliances are the FMS SMART ALIGN, Invisalign and the clear aligner systems. The Clear Aligner System is unique in that the clinician must be able to plan the path to optimal results before initiating treatment. The clear aligner system is based on the clinician making in-course adjustments to achieve the treatment goals.
Traditional orthodontic treatment typically involves the use of metal braces that are continually adjusted over an extended period of time to correct certain functional and cosmetic dental issues.

With Clear aligners, FMS SmartALIGN, and Invisalign, the orthodontic process works through a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that are aesthetic. They are also extremely comfortable and convenient to the patient.

Clear aligners have been proven effective in professional research and in orthodontic practices worldwide. The technology has become so much of a treatment standard that many Certified Orthodontists are now providing this non-traditional treatment choice as an alternative to traditional metal braces.

The Basics

About Ortho

CLEAR ALIGNER SYSTEM:

Clear aligner system is a unique biomechanical system involving the use of removable plastic appliance that is thin, durable and practically invisible. The system is centered on the clinician constantly modifying the appliance to realize treatment goals and when necessary to make in-course correction.
Spaces must be evident for tooth movement within these appliances, If there is lack of space in within the dental arches spaces have to be created

Creating space within the dental arches:

Spaces must be evident for tooth movement within these appliances, If there is lack of space within the dental arches spaces have to be created. This usually involves expansion, extraction or interproximal reduction. Extraction is not a suitable option for gaining space with plastic appliances because it is difficult to upright roots and to close any remaining extraction space efficiently after the crowding is resolved. Expansion with the clear appliance is possible, but it is indicated in only those cases where the arch is narrow and its warranted for expansion within the alveolar bone housing. When extraction and expansion is not possible in some cases we advocate interproximal reduction in which the tooth is shaped very minimal with diamond discs.

Inducing tooth movement force in clear aligner system:

Clear aligner tooth moving mechanics allows the clinician the freedom to place force on the crown surface wherever force would have the most desirable effect.

WHY WOULD I WANT IT?

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments. Aligners also allow you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to their final positions. The number of visits to the orthodontist is drastically reduced in clear aligner therapy. Total treatment time typically lasts nine to 15 months, and the number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both numbers will vary from case to case.

Results:

Results depend on many factors: shape of teeth, amount of moving, root position, etc. If you are treating a case with minor movement and proper root position, the result will be much more aesthetic than cases with poor root position and major rotations.
The Clear-Aligner will not only move the teeth into the correct position, but can also be used as a retainer. The Clear-Aligner will last up to 2 years.

General Instructions
  • Each aligner should be worn for 2 weeks (14-15 days).
  • Each aligner has to be worn throughout the night and day, except during meals and while brushing your teeth.
  • In case of loss, damage or breakage of your aligners, please report to your treating doctor immediately.

Inserting the Aligners

  • Make sure you have the proper aligner – the upper for the top teeth and the lower for your bottom teeth.
  • You may insert either the upper or lower aligner first. When inserting each aligner, gently push the aligners over your front teeth
  • Them apply equal pressure, using your fingertips, to the tops of your left and right molars (back teeth) until the aligner snaps into place.
  • Ensure that the aligners are bite onto the chewy provided to seat your aligners into position.
  • If you experience significant discomfort, please contact your treating doctor immediately.
  • Aligners fit tightly so you may feel some pressure which is necessary to move your teeth.
  • After insertion you may speak with a slight lisp, which will go away after several days as your tongue adjusts to your aligners.
  • Aligners should be worn all day and all night, at least 22 hours each day, except while eating, brushing and flossing or as directed by your doctor.

Aligner Removal

  • Using the Aligner removal tool, start on one side at the molars, and slowly work your way around to the other side
  • To help prevent damage, avoid unnecessary removal.
  • DO NOT use any sharp object to remove your aligners.
  • Immediately rinse aligner with water, shake off excess water, and store your aligners in the protective case provided with your starter kit.
  • DO NOT use excessive force to bend or twist an aligner to remove.

Daily Care and Maintenance

  • Rinse each aligner thoroughly with water after each cleaning.
  • Clean aligners using a soft bristle toothbrush, normal tap water and a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Avoid using mouthwash to clean your aligners.
  • When not in use, always store your aligners in your aligner box
  • Always clean and dry your aligners before storing them in aligner box.
  • DO NOT use denture cleaners to clean aligners or soak them in mouthwash. These products can damage the surface of the aligner, causing it to become dull and more visible

Some Cautions

  • Avoid chewing gum and hot liquids while wearing aligners.
  • Brush after every meal before inserting the aligners back in position.
  • Some edible items can stain your aligner. Always brush before inserting the aligners back in position to avoid staining of the aligner.
  • Please do not use hot water to clean your aligners, as they will disfigure.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always remember to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your aligners.
  • HandIe onIy ONE aligner at a time.

Special note

Always keep your most recently used aligners (previous set) also in a separate case / pouch in a secure place. If your current aligner is lost or broken, call your treating doctor immediately. You may temporarily go back one stage and use the previous set of aligners while a replacement is being made. If you have pets at home keep away from the reach of pets as they have a tendancy to chew the aligners. Aligner replacement in such scenario takes time and will increase the duration of treatment.
