Bone loss is a real concern and it does affect the way
implants are planned… but in many cases, there are still ways to
        work around it.

Sometimes the missing bone can be rebuilt with a bone graft. In
other situations, especially when multiple teeth are missing,
advanced implant techniques can make better use of the bone that
is still available and fabricate a new set of fixed teeth.

At FMS Dental, we have been working with dental implants since
1999 and have placed more than 25,000 implants. At FMS Dental, our multi-speciality team
uses advanced 3D scans and an in-house CAD-CAM lab to explore
both bone grafting and graft-free options for dental implants,
        all under one roof.

For the patient, this means something very important:

We are not trying to fit every class="fms-bone-options" aria-label="Why bone matters for dental implants">

Why is bone so important for a dental implant?

A dental implant works like the root of a tooth. It is placed
inside the jawbone and over time the surrounding bone heals
closely around it and fuses to the implant. This strong connection
is what gives an implant the strength to support a crown, bridge
or a complete set of fixed teeth.

For the proper fusion between the implant and the jawbone to
occur, there needs to be enough healthy bone for it all around.
As a rule of thumb, a minimum height of about 10 mm and width
of around 5-6 mm is required, although the exact requirement can
vary depending on the implant size, its position and the quality
        of the bone.

If the bone is too thin, too short, or weak in a particular area,
a conventional implant may not have enough support around it for
long-term stability and can fail over time.

At FMS Dental, this is assessed using a
        3D CBCT scan,
which gives us a much clearer picture of the jaw and helps us
decide whether a regular implant can be placed directly, whether
a bone graft is needed, or whether another implant approach
        would be more suitable.
This may
include procedures such as ridge splitting or expansion,
corticotomy, block grafting, or using a titanium mesh to support
        and shape the new bone.

The bone graft material itself can also come from different
sources. Sometimes we use the patient’s own bone, called an
autograft, taken from areas such as the chin or the region behind
the wisdom teeth. In very large defects, bone from another part
of the body, such as the rib or hip, may occasionally be
considered, although this is now relatively uncommon in routine
        dental implant treatment.

Another option is specially processed human donor bone or
animal-derived bone material. These materials are extensively
processed and sterilised for medical use, therefore the risk of
disease transmission is extremely low. We can also use chemical
bone substitutes, known as alloplasts, which are mineral-based
materials designed to act like natural bone and provide a
framework for new bone to grow.

Very often, we do not use just one material.
