Inhalation sedation

To decrease the child’s anxiety level and to provide painless dental treatment under inhalation sedation (laughing gas)

The goals of inhalation sedation for the pediatric patients
  1. Facilitate the provision of quality care.
  2. Minimize the extremes of disruptive behavior.
  3. Promote a positive psychological response to treatment.
  4. Promote patient welfare & safety.
  5. Return the patient to physiologic state.
Indications for inhalation sedation
  • Preschool children
  •  Patients who cannot cooperate due to a lack of psychological or emotional maturity and/or mental, physical or medical disability
  • Child  who require extensive dental care  & would require or benefit from prolonged visits
  • Fearful, anxious child for whom basic behaviour management has not been successful

OBJECTIVES

  • Reduce or eliminate anxiety.
  • Reduce untoward movement and reaction to dental treatment.
  • Communication and patient cooperation.
  • Longer appointments
  • Mentally, physically or medically compromised child
  • Raise the patient’s pain threshold.

GENERAL ANESTHESIA

INDICATION

  • Children who have extensive dental problems cannot cooperate due to a lack of psychological or emotional maturity and/or mental, physical or medical disabilities.

 

  • Child required total oral rehabilitation in a single course including :
  • A full mouth prophylaxis treatment
  • Operative dental restoration
  • Pulp therapy
  • Tooth extraction
  • Stainless steel crown reconstruction
  • And preventive resin restoration.
